Penny Deposits: What You Need to Know

Recent updates to national coin circulation policies now allow us to accept pennies again. We understand these types of adjustments can be confusing. We are committed to monitoring changes and adjusting our policies as information becomes available so we can better serve our members.
Pennies are No Longer Being Minted
On November 13, 2025, the United States minted their last penny. While pennies are no longer being minted, they remain in circulation and are still legal tender. Until pennies are no longer in circulation, the availability of pennies may fluctuate at certain periods of time.
What to Expect at Bluestone Federal Credit Union
Effective immediately, Bluestone Federal Credit Union is accepting penny deposits again at all branches.
Members may include pennies when depositing coins, including through our coin-counting machines at available locations. Pennies may be deposited loose or rolled, with no special requirements or limits at this time.

Bluestone Federal Credit Union Rates
Yes. As of January 14, 2026, we can accept penny deposits at all branches again. We will continue to accept pennies as long as we have the ability to buy and sell pennies through the Federal Reserve.
Yes. Pennies are accepted for coin counting. Please note that the microbranch at 6311 W. 41st Street, Sioux Falls, will not have a coin-counting machine.
There are no limits at this time.
Yes. Pennies remain legal tender and may continue to be used for transactions and deposits.
Earlier changes in our ability to buy and sell pennies affected our options to accept penny deposits. Recent changes now allow us to accept them again.
Policies can evolve, but at this time, penny deposits are accepted. If anything changes, we’ll keep members informed.
